Just like most building materials, tiles, mortar, and concrete subfloors are sensitive to temperature. When things heat up, they expand. When things cool down, they contract.
While this movement is usually microscopic and invisible to the naked eye, continuous cycles of heating and cooling create physical stress across your floor. If a tiled area doesn't have proper spacing or expansion joints to accommodate that shift, the tiles start pushing against one another.

While this is more common in showers or with sudden kitchen mishaps, it stresses the structural bond between the tile and the adhesive beneath it.
