One thing you can easily do yourself is to apply a grout sealant. If you are not familiar with the world of sealants, no need to worry. We will walk you through it.
Particularly in household settings, you are typically going to have one of two types of grouts. Knowing the type of grout, you have will help you choose the best sealant for your tile installation. So, before you head out to the store, figure out if you have cement grout or epoxy grout.
For tiled areas that are exposed to moderate amounts of water and moisture, such as a kitchen backsplash or floor, a non- penetrating grout sealer will work well. You may also see this type of sealer advertised as a surface coating and it will provide a nice basic layer of protection from water, grease, and dirt. Typically, you should think about reapplying every 1-2 years.
For areas that are exposed to heavy moisture, such as the bathroom and laundry room, a penetrating grout sealer is the way to go. When searching for a penetrating sealer, look for ones that work with the style of tile you have. In addition, search out one that will leave a natural unstained finish, unless you wish to alter the color of your grout in some way. Typically, a penetrating sealer will protect your grout for at least 3-5 years.
Once you clean the tiled area, you can apply the sealer of your choice with either a brush or a sponge. Be sure to pick up enough product as well since you should aim to apply two coats of sealer. For a quart of sealant, you can expect to pay at least $13. A worthy investment in our opinion if it means that you can spend less time scrubbing your grout.
