A Guide to Killing Mold

Any place that is exposed to moisture for prolonged periods of time is at risk of developing mold. One area in your home that commonly is exposed to water and humidity is your bathroom. Because of this, mold is often found in the bathroom. If you see signs of mold in your bathroom, you can fight back. Here’s how.

The quickest way to neutralize mold spores is by utilizing a bleach mixture. Prepare the solution by mixing one cup of bleach into a large bucket of warm water. Next, grab your protective cleaning gear. Long rubber gloves, a ventilated face mask, and goggles will protect your eyes, lungs, and skin from irritation. Make sure to also boost the ventilation in the area. Run the bathroom vent, keep the door open, and bring in a box fan if you need the extra circulation.

After you get set up, you can begin applying the mixture to all the moldy surfaces. Dip a stiff bristled brush into the solution and begin scrubbing the affected areas. For showers and tubs, using a stiff toothbrush can help you really get into grout and caulk lines. Once the surface area has been scrubbed with the bleach solution, you can be confident that mold has been killed. Simply rinse the area with water and then dry with a clean towel.

No one likes scrubbing mold. It is gross looking and sometimes it can be dangerous. Naturally then, you will want to prevent mold from developing in the future. The key to mold prevention is simply minimizing dampness and minimizing dampness can be done with proper ventilation. Make sure that your bathroom vent fan is clean and in good working condition. Make sure to use it when you are showering or bathing and for 5-10 minutes after you are done as well. It also does not hurt to dry the shower walls and tub with a towel after each use. This practice takes only a few seconds, but it can save you hours of scrubbing in the future.
